Our team’s goal is to enable the production of 1 million ventilators this Spring. In the United States, there are approximately 150,000 ventilators. Significantly increasing the number of ventilators through traditional manufacturing will likely take several months. A shortage of ventilators has resulted in triage where more elderly patients are not mechanically ventilated and left to die. If the virus spreads rapidly in the United States, we will need millions of patients on mechanical ventilation who will otherwise die. The peak of the disease in the United States will likely come in a number of weeks rather than months so there is an urgent need to ramp up production of ventilators.
